About Prostate Problems

Consulting your GP

Your doctor will carry out a digital rectal examination in order to feel your prostate gland for any abnormalities. This is virtually painless. You will have a blood test as well to measure your PSA level (prostate specific antigen). PSA levels are dependant on many factors but high readings are often the first indicator of cancer. If any irregularities are found you will be referred to a Urologist for further tests.

Consulting your Urologist

Your Urologist will conduct tests which may include a trans rectal ultrasound scan (TRUS) and a biopsy, which is a procedure to take a small sample of prostate tissue for examination. If cancer is diagnosed, the results will help you and your Consultant discuss which treatment is the most appropriate for you.
