£85,000 GreenLight laser cuts hospital stays from 3 days to 1 day

Thanks to the continued generosity of our donors, we were able to make another important contribution to RSCH recently when we handed over a state of the art GreenLight Laser to the Urology department.

Costing in excess of £85,000, with its accessories, the new laser will primarily be used in treating a condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia which is caused by the prostate becoming gradually enlarged. BPH leads to increased frequency of and difficulties with urination, particularly at night. Conventional surgery normally requires a 3 night stay in hospital but greenlight laser treatment has the advantage of causing significantly less bleeding and will cut this to one day, freeing up urgently needed hospital beds.

The laser will also be used for patients with prostate cancer to reduce the size of an enlarged prostate either prior to diagnosis or prior to treatment.
