Stephen Langley, Professor of Urology at The University of Surrey and one of the Royal Surrey’s Consultant Urologists, has been awarded the 2005 Karl Storz-Harold Hopkins Golden Telescope Award for his contribution to improving the treatment of prostate cancer.
The Golden Telescope is awarded annually by a committee from the British Association of Urological Surgeons and is awarded to a Consultant Urologist who has made a significant and lasting contribution to urology within ten years of first being appointed a consultant. On receiving this award Professor Langley commented, “I am extremely honoured to receive this award, which is a testament to the team that Robert Laing and I have developed. Our work has been a significant factor in placing Guildford as the country’s leading centre for the treatment of prostate cancer”.
Together with Consultant Oncologist, Robert Laing, Stephen Langley leads a team which is particularly noted for its research into Brachytherapy, a technique for treating early prostate cancer using tiny radioactive seeds that are inserted permanently into the prostate gland. This treatment has few, if any, side effects and is highly effective in treating and curing patients.
